This is the first time something like this has ever happened to me.

I was supposed to catch a cab to Bangsar, because we were running late for a 10am meeting with our dear friend Roslan. It was 9am.

I walked down to the Kelana Square guardhouse, and waited for a cab.

Within 2 minutes, a white one appeared. The driver, bald, slightly obnoxious, and very English illiterate – rejected me because HE DIDN’T KNOW WHERE BANGSAR IS =.=

Right there at that moment, a very expensive white Hyundai (I’m sorry, I’m bad in naming cars :P ) heading out of Kelana Square stopped. The passenger window rolled down. The driver was a Chinese man, probably in his mid-late 50s. He had a kind face.

“Where are you heading to, miss?” he asked.

    What does this guy want?

    “Bangsar,” I said.

I thought I was doomed. Was he going to kidnap me?

“Hop in, sister. I’ll bring you there,” he said.

    What?

“No thanks, I’ll just wait for another cab,” I said.

I mean. You’re a girl, an Asian one at that – and with all the nightmares of rape and murder cases out there, obviously you’d be hesitant, no?

“Don’t worry, sister. I’m a Christian brother. It’s Good Friday, hop in. Let me take you there,” he said.

So, here’s the deal. A stranger whom I have never seen before (a man at that!) offered me a ride all the way to Bangsar. Completely free of charge.

You would think I’m crazy, but I hopped in.

I could hear my mom and dad’s voices nagging at the back of my head as I climbed into the car, but at the same time I felt completely at ease with the decision.

The man introduced himself as Ten. Mr Ten, I called him. He was heading to Mont Kiara, which was nearby (I think). He goes to Metro Tabernacle (Kee Aun, please thank this man when you see him!), has 3 kids, and owns a bird’s nest business. He was in Kelana Square for the Full Gospel Businessmen fellowship – of which I have heard of.

“I felt in my heart that when I saw you, I knew I had to take you to wherever you’re going,” he said.

“You could just drop me off wherever, I’ll hitch a cab from there,” I said.

“No, I’ll take you to where you’re heading to. If anything happens to you, later God punish me,” he laughed.

We had a very good conversation about life, church arson, and investing in a bird’s house instead of buying a human house.

And to cut the long story short, here I am now, in Bangsar – safe, sound, and feeling extremely blessed.

“Please take care,” Mr Ten said with an extremely kind smile.

I called Joel and excitedly related this story to him. We laughed, and laughed, and laughed for somewhat a minute or two. This only happens to Joanne Soo, says he, it’s like Joanne In Wonderland. I called Aron, who says I’m lucky. And like all wise bestfriends, he ended the conversation with a warning ‘not everyone offering you a lift is a kind soul’. Yes, I truly am aware of that.

It’s Good Friday. And if this doesn’t reinforce my faith today, I don’t think anything else can.

    You, my God, are good.
