My brother has 7 ulcers on his tonsils.

During the trip home today (the darling has been my personal chauffeur for 2 weeks now. thank you love.) he asked me a series of questions re tonsilitis.

How long does it take to heal?

Can I go for a jab?

What if I remove my tonsils?

Can you talk when you had it?

    Will it take months?

    Will I die?

And so on and so forth.

My brother and I have been dentally challenged for the most part of our lives. Regular ulcers, horrendous teeth arrangement (a maternal inheritance, so my Dad claims), odd shaped tooth – the likes. He’s worn braces for 4 years. He’s had his wire twang in half, his crown fall off, and we both have had our share of stubborn brackets which won’t stay put. (At one point, I swear I spent more time with my orthodontist than with God. That, a separate story another day)

While most siblings spend their time squabbling/fighting cold wars/talk about more regular siblingy stuff, we talked about our teeth. For 30 full minutes during the drive home.

    It went something like this.

“You wear your braces 2 years only, don’t complain la.”

“Where got complain. I actually like lor. Just not the ulcer la.”

“You braces or not also still ulcer one la.”

“Oh I will miss the flossing. Actually quite fun. Remember last time when first wear the time, quite susah to fit the fella in.”

    “Yala of cos la.”

“When I take out, the first thing I’m going to bite is your finger.”

    “WHY?”

    “For fun.”

    “Gila.”

    beat.

“You know wearing retainer more susah?”

“I don’t care la susah or not, I suffer so much dii when I take out I better be damn pretty la.

And for the first time in 18 years, the boy rolled his eyes at me.
