The walkway in the hotel room is creepy at night.
It is almost 3am. YOUTH’10 met its conclusion approximately 5 hours ago.
I remember the 3 months prior. The fitting into multiple roles, the adrenaline rush from the crazy deadlines, the long days, the crisis management moments.
All that concluded in just 3 days.
The turn up was tremendous. The media went nuts covering the Festival. The tweets, the comments posted across social media platforms.
The highly reliable, passionate & driven volunteers in our team. I have not found so much joy working with volunteers.
My roommates are sound asleep. On my right, Syakirin snores, slightly. Her Organizer tag peeks from beneath her, mocking at my disability from removing it from under her weight. Khairul stirs for a moment, and settles on his side, without moving the Dilbert book he fell asleep in. It is cold. He is curled like a shriveled prawn. I turn to my left and I see Ross, stiff cold like a rock. I attempt to tug the covers beneath him, but to no avail. I crawl back to my bed.
I sit, my sore legs tucked warmly under the dusty covers. I am wide awake. I bask in the newfound freedom; my mind barely able to grasp the fact that after months of hard labour, the Festival was now over. The bond which once tied me down, like handcuffs over my boney wrists, lingers slightly.
I reflect, and conclude that I have had a great few months. The Festival was an effort well sown. 88366 youths turned up. Best we’ve had since its first inception in 2008.
My colleagues have worked hard for this. Their energy, enthusiasm, crisis management styles have taught me much. I lie down, turn to my slumbering counterparts – who are now spinning into a mini snorechestra – and just before I let my body succumb to exhaustion, I smile.
I have never been prouder to be a part of such a great bunch of people
