the pet daddy wants to rear

My dad has been in a very good mood today.
He came home, and with a big smile on his face, he asked, “Liyeng. Do you want to rear a pet?”
He has never been fond of animals. This took me by surprise.
“Uh. I already have one,” I said, defensively. He was holding bananas he bought on his way home from work, and I was half worried he was going to make fun of me in my monkey suit or something.
“What pet you already have?” my dad asked.
I hesitated.
“Uh.. he’s in his room upstairs. Been rearing it for the past 18 years,” I tried.
He laughed, but a sinister one.
“This pet I want to rear is better than that one. Much better,” he said.
Something better than my brother? o.O
“What pet is this?” I asked.
“Octopus.”
